Physical Education & Sports

Each classroom participates in Physical Education (PE) led by an experienced and trained PE teacher. The PE program incorporates the curriculum standards set by the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) into each class. Children learn basic fitness concepts like stretching, cardio and strength conditioning and balance and control of their bodies in new ways. Students are introduced to a variety of activities like movement exploration, tumbling, basketball, softball, volleyball, floor hockey and yoga. This year we have entered into a partnership with Sports4Kids, a non-profit organization whose mission is to support and create youth sports and recreational opportunities to enhance the health and well-being of youth and communities.

A 75% pass rate is required for 5th grade fitness test.

Children's weight and physical activity are measured through the California Physical Fitness Test, which is administered annually to public school children in grades five, seven, and nine. Six areas of fitness are measured: upper body strength, flexibility, aerobic capacity, body composition, abdominal strength, and trunk strength. Students must meet minimum fitness levels in all six areas to pass this state test.

Indicators on overweight and unfit children are based on a California Center for Public Health Advocacy's analysis of this same physical fitness data. Students who do not meet the body composition standard are considered overweight, and students who do not meet the aerobic capacity standard are considered unfit.
